MILWAUKEE (NBA/Newsfeed) – The Milwaukee Bucks say forward Luc Mbah a Moute has undergone successful surgery for tendinitis in his right knee.

The team says Mbah a Moute had surgery Friday in Los Angeles. The 6-foot-8 forward is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for training camp in October.

Mbah a Moute missed 19 games this season, including the last three of the regular season, because of soreness and tendinitis in his right knee. In 22 starts this season, the four-year NBA veteran averaged a career-high 7.7 points per game while shooting a career-best 51 percent from the field. He added 5.5 rebounds in 23.5 minutes per game.

Nuggets’ Chandler Has Surgery, Expected Ready for Camp

DENVER (NBA/Newsfeed) – The Denver Nuggets say forward Wilson Chandler is expected to be ready by the start of training camp next season after undergoing surgery to repair a labral tear in his left hip.

The arthroscopic procedure was performed Monday by Dr. Marc Philippon.

Chandler arrived in Denver last year as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks. He played for Zhejiang Guangsha of the Chinese Basketball Association during the NBA lockout and rejoined the Nuggets in March, signing a five-year deal worth nearly $ 37 million.

The 24-year-old averaged 9.4 points and 5.1 rebounds in eight games, including six starts, but spent more time on the sideline than on the court after hurting his hip.

Nets Trade for Mehmet Okur to Fill in for Injured Lopez

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

The Nets have landed a player Deron Williams is familiar with.

New Jersey traded for Mehmet Okur, bringing in the Turkish big man to fill in for the injured Brook Lopez. The Jazz get a second round pick and a trade exception out of the deal – and they get $ 10.9 million off the books.

Williams and Okur played together in Utah and ran a pretty good pick-and-pop when Okur was healthy. Last season Okur played just 13 games after recovering from an Achilles injury, but he did play during the lockout in his native Turkey and looked good according to reports.

Okur is fully healthy and was looking for a bounce-back year, closer to his 2007 All-Star year. He had impressed Jazz officials so far in camp, which is probably part of the reason he got traded. Okur gave the Jazz 17 points a game back in 2009 and is a career 37.7 percent shooter from three. He can stretch the floor, and while he isn’t a great rebounder neither is Lopez.

Enes Kanter, come on down, you’re the next contestant on “Jazz’s favorite big man.” The Turkish rookie is going to get a lot more run.

Okur is not the polished offensive player that Lopez is now (and he’s nine years older) but he’s a good gamble for a Nets team suddenly desperate to replace size and scoring on the roster. Okur

Suns Training Camp Notes: High Hopes for Telfair, Improvement for Lopez, Dealing with Pietrus

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

The Phoenix Suns are holding training camp in town this week at Grand Canyon University. Here are some notes from Sunday’s morning and evening practice sessions:

- The Suns were without Grant Hill, Sebastian Telfair, and Markieff Morris for their morning practice session, but had them on the floor for the evening session, once Vince Carter cleared waivers on Sunday afternoon. That left the team with only nine players, so Alvin Gentry drafted assistant coach Corey Gaines into duty to fill that 10th spot. So why Gaines, instead of assistant coach and former Suns star Dan Majerle? “We were trying to get a guy that could walk,” Gentry joked.

- Robin Lopez was a disappointment for the Suns last season, his ability to perform dramatically reduced due to injuries that he seemed slow to recover from. It’s a different story early in training camp, however, as Lopez has said he feels great, and has a lot more bounce in his game. Gentry agreed, and likes what he’s seen from him so far. “Without a doubt, you can see that he’s almost completely different than he was last year. I think athletically, even conditioning, I think his overall personality, everything has kind of changed. I do think that he feels like he’s healthy now, that was a major issue last year. He would not ever say that, but I don’t know. It just seems to me that he’s running better, he’s rebounding better, and he’s finishing better. So we’ll just see how that translates into games.”

- Steve Nash is used to having to mentor a new backup point guard in camp, as it’s something he’s done in the majority of his training camps with the Suns. Sebastian Telfair is this season’s new recruit, and Nash spoke briefly about him after Sunday morning’s session: “He’s someone who has a new opportunity, and a chance to, I think, not only have a big contribution for us, but in a way, kind of resurrect his career,” Nash said. “He’ll get a lot of opportunity to grow and learn, and be a big part of our team.”

Suns president of basketball operations Lon Babby was optimistic about what Telfair would bring to the team, saying “This is an important spot for him, and I think he sees it that way. This is his chance to really shine and work with Steve. He came into the league with such high expectations, and they’re hard to ever meet those expectations. I think now he’s settled down, he’s mature, and I think we have a chance to catch lightning in a bottle.”

- Zabian Dowdell hasn’t yet participated in camp due to experiencing pain in one of his knees. It’s unfortunate, because Dowdell contributed at times last season, especially on the defensive end of the floor. He’ll still be given that opportunity, to compete for a lead backup guard role. But with Telfair and Shannon Brown now on the roster he’s going to be at least a step or two behind. Steve Nash sympathizes: “I feel bad for Z because he’s just not able to go right now,” Nash said. “And the season’s so short, hopefully he can get up to speed quickly because he did a lot of good things last year.”

- The Suns had a deal in place to send Mickael Pietrus to Toronto for a conditional second round draft pick, but it was cancelled once Pietrus was found to still be ailing from the knee injury which sidelined him for the last 12 regular season games last year. It’s clear the Suns do not want Pietrus on the team this year, yet Babby was diplomatic in discussing the issue on Sunday.

“We had a transaction that we couldn’t consummate, and we’ll keep working at it,” Babby said. “So he’s still part of this team and will be treated with respect as we try to get him healthy.”

Healthy enough to package out of town in another deal, most likely.

- Marcus Landry was invited to Suns camp, and was expected to be there by Sunday at the latest. But Lon Babby said that Landry hasn’t yet received clearance from FIBA to participate, so the Suns are still waiting. Babby expects Landry to be cleared in the next day or so and to have him in camp hopefully early this week.

Report: Brandon Roy to Announce His Retirement

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

It’s probably for the best. But I still feel robbed of what could have been.

Brandon Roy is going to announce his retirement due to medical reasons, tweets Chris Broussard of ESPN.

Sources say Brandon Roy to announce medical retirement due to degenerative knees, possibly as soon as today

Roy has missed much of last season due to his knees, which essentially just have no cartilage left. He has tried rest and a variety of treatments, and has shows flashes of being fine – his brilliant Game 4 against Dallas in the playoffs last year reminded us of what he could do.

He was expected to join the Blazers for training camp this season and team officials said they would not use the amnesty on him. He was going to get one more shot.

But if he had a setback, he may have realized it was time.

Which is sad. This is a guy who would have been one of the NBA’s elite guards, the franchise anchor in Portland for years. It would have been a marvelous career.

I feel robbed not getting to see it. Portland fans feel worse.

But this is probably for the best.

Jerry Buss’ Son Jesse Arrested for Intoxication

Phil Jackson’s not around for questions about whether he’ll return and training camp hasn’t opened yet, but you know it’s NBA season when there’s drama surrounding the Lakers’ front office. Son of Lakers owner Jerry Buss Jesse Buss was arrested for intoxication Friday in Lexington, Kentucky. WDRB in Lexington reports:

Lexington Jail officials say Buss has bonded out of jail.Lexington Police were called to the area of South Broadway and W. Maxwell Street around 3:39 Friday morning for a report of a man laying on the ground.

Thats where officials say Buss was picked up and charged.

Sources tell WDRB he was demanding preferential treatment and told officers he was the son of Jerry Buss.

via Son of L.A. Lakers owner arrested in Lexington – WDRB 41 Louisville – News, Weather, Sports Community.

To be fair, when I get sleepy, I lay down, too. Maybe not in the middle of the street (anymore), but still. Oh, and you pulled the “Do you know who I am?” routine, Jesse? Not cool. Also, to answer your question, no, we do not, nor do the fine men of the Lexington police department. Buss’ father Jerry Buss was arrested for DU in 2007.

Look, I think yo have to ask if planking was somehow involved in this situation. Or maybe that’s what planking really is. The sober equivalent of getting drunk and randomly laying down.

Report: Blazers Expected to Use Amnesty Clause on Roy

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Is it time for the Portland Trail Blazers to cut bait with Brandon Roy?

It looks like they are, according to a tweet from John Canzano, radio and television personality in the area.

Blazers appear ready to exercise amnesty on Brandon Roy…. Hoping they take a longer look at him before they do it.

Roy has four years, $ 68 million left on his contract – which was not a bad deal at the time, he was one of the top guards in the game and is still just 27. But there is no cartlidge left in his knee – it’s bone-on-bone – which is why he played just 47 games last season and can’t be counted on to do the heavy lifting any more.

Still, should the Blazers take a longer look at him, bring him into training camp as Canzano suggested? On one hand it can’t hurt. The thing is, Roy may look good in camp after a summer of treatment and rest. The real question is how his knee feels in February, in April and through the playoffs. Last year he gave us one brilliant playoff game, but is that enough?

What about keeping Roy around longer? To keep Roy around for one more season would cost the Blazers about $ 8 million, Ben Golliver estimated for CSNNW.com. He thinks that’s worth the test.

A test year for Roy would give the once-vaunted Roy/Aldridge/Oden trio one last shot at playoff success, delaying the roster explosion decision until next fall. It could allow the Blazers to focus their short-term free agency efforts on adding better-than-minimum quality to their frontcourt and would help keep the all-important chemistry and continuity from last season despite all the lockout turmoil. Roy sells tickets, captures imaginations and has been the face of the franchise for roughly four years. A fast, clean break will not come without significant public relations costs; cutting ties means killing hope, however unlikely, for a return to All-Star form. If it’s your job to sell tickets and court sponsors, aren’t you pitching Allen that the extra $ 8 million will produce some bottom-line benefits?

I’m not convinced. Roy is not going to be an All-Star again. Portland needs a new star to replace him and they can try to get that through free agency or the deep upcoming draft. But to see if Roy has some magic left for a full season – and maybe Greg Oden can come back too and contribute – seems more fantasy than reality.

All that said, it’s Paul Allen’s team, who knows what they will do? We’d ask the GM but they don’t have a permanent one.
